“Travel heavy” by Flavia Baradun
Travel heavy – What kind of loads do people carry around?
The art project “Travel heavy” by Flavia Baradun explores this question and reflects how we deal with physical and emotional burdens in a global society. Inspired by the physical form made of the material concrete, which is worked with at dade design, the title “Travel heavy” becomes a symbol of the heaviness that, for example, a journey can bring. A journey that for many is the epitome of the proverbial “lightness of being”.
Is only he truly free who carries nothing around with him?
The accumulation of things, the heaviness of luggage, holds what we seem to need. On display is a collection of objects that we want or need to take with us for a comfortable journey. It raises the question of the importance of these objects, to what extent we include them in our fixed luggage and how they actually facilitate our journey. Objects designed to optimize our movement or our condition, like a life preserver or a mouth mask, like heavy jewelry or a rolling suitcase.
Crash. Standing still. Sinking.
When the journey comes to an end. What journeys are associated with life or death? A preoccupation with objects and situations that gives space to the tragedy of an unwanted journey of this kind.
Self-optimization mania – Generation Instagram
In this context, faster, better, healthier, cooler and richer are terms that are firmly anchored in our minds through imaginary visual standards – which are now an integral part of permanent photographic self-staging on social platforms.
“Travel heavy” questions, among other things, this self-optimization mania.
Wealth weighted
Necessity and luxury have become difficult to distinguish, and luxury and ballast are not always easy to distinguish. Does money not make people happy after all? When wealth manifests itself as physical or emotional weight, the hoped-for happiness can become a burden.
